Santa Fe introduced slogans that promoted service between Chicago and California. "Santa Fe All The Way" was first used in 1940, followed by "Ship and Travel Santa Fe All The Way" in 1947. This may have been one of those early boxes with the slogan or even earlier box that was repainted with the slogan. The derelict equipment may have been Box Car Red but I doubt Tuscan Red. This old box car was one of their cars and was from a probably narrow era when they were built on steel girders with fabricated steel ends and top but still sided with wood siding. More recently, the walk boards on top were outlawed. They were a left over from when trainmen walked the cars setting the brakes. That was a matter of some panic on Denver South Park and Pacific trains emerging east from the Alpine tunnel through the Divide. The trainmen would run in a panic, one from the front and one from the end, crossing in the middle, setting the brake wheels with an axe handle. When the crew passed, they retightened the other's work all the while praying they could prevent a total runaway before it hit the nasty Sawmill Curve (38,38,420N & 106, 22,109W for the curious) down near Hancock, or the whole works would become airborne.

I guess it is a "Combine" now. While the Denver and Rio Grande had an armed stand-off war with the Santa Fe at the Royal Gorge, Colorado and Southern eventually worked out trackage rights with the Santa Fe from their right of way in southern Colorado into Denver. This is the end of the line. Not an unusual combination in this country for farmers who wanted sealed storage. This is not an unusual "combine" in the St.Vrain, Platte River valleys. An added bonus is that they usually had sliding doors that worked for tighter than normal barnyard storage. It would not keep mice out now. If I remember correctly, Colorado peaked at 3500 miles of railroads in the Rockies and surrounding plains.

Eddie and I spotted it on the Google Maps and it looked to us like it might have been the original "manor" house of the farm. Boy, were we seriously mistaken. And I have noticed another shed off to the west side of this contraption. Phil thinks the original house was where the current house is now. Maybe the "traveling salesmen" had to bunk out here until the farmer's daughter dropped the ol' rope ladder from her window.

Even in this dry autumn that is stretching now into January, we puttered around the farm in the warmth of the sun. This is already a week into January but not necessarily exceptional for this area in Colorado. The colors that are left are the usual winter colors and belie the name Colorado . Isabella Bird commented on the sere seasonal colors in the Longmont area when she visited in the Nineteenth Century. This late morning sun bounced plenty of light into the shaded area of the box though I still processed it with two RAW layers.

I ran across this poor pooch in a parking lot today. Although it was only in the 60's, this dog was in a newer VW bug that was parked facing the midday sun and it still gets hot in a car.

I noticed him as I entered the store and an hour later he was still shade, no ventilation, no water and he looked so miserable. When I got into my truck it was hot and I was worried.

I had to go across the street to the pet store and while there I got the number of the Humane Society, determined to call if our friend was still there... AND HE WAS.

After being in this car for another half an hour or so, he was panting even more and looking out the side window for his person to come.

I drove up in front of the bug to block the sun and give him some relief and called HS. After 10 minutes I was connected with an officer who got all the vitals and said he would be there as soon as he could. I asked him if I needed to stay and when he said no, being the coward that I am, I felt I needed to beat feet, lest I be confronted with some HUMAN getting irate all over my A**. Which I'm certain would have happened, because anyone who can leave a dog like this is most assuredly one self-centered son of a B or a B!

I hope the enforcment officer got there in a hurry and unloaded all over this person, so this won't happen again.
